Ross has handed over a cheque for £42,000 to Riders for Health following the final show of his Nonsensory Overload tour at London’s Hammersmith Apollo.
The money was raised by audiences up and down the country over the three-month tour and will be used to help Riders for Health ensure health workers in Africa have reliable transport so they can reach isolated communities with lifesaving health care.
Riders for Health had volunteers at each of the 78 shows and fans across the country donated lots of money each night. Ross also signed hundreds of exclusive posters, which were sold to raise money for the charity.
Ross said: ‘The response was incredible, not only did we sell out of the limited edition signed posters, but the bucket collection was simply awesome, every night hundreds of pounds in the buckets. The venues were great and the volunteers who came along made all this possible. This will have a direct impact where it’s needed and to everyone who donated or bought a poster, a massive, Thank you.’
Riders for Health’s chief executive officer, Andrea Coleman said: ‘I am completely amazed by this donation. Ross is such a fantastic supporter of Riders for Health’s work and we were delighted when he told us he wanted to raise money for us on his tour. The money that has been donated by Ross’ fans will help to save so many lives in Africa, and we hope that it has also helped to introduce more people to our work for the first time.’
Ross also helped to raise awareness for Riders for Health this Christmas when he presented a Radio 4 appeal on the organisation’s behalf. The appeal, which was broadcast on national radio, highlighted the need to get health workers in Africa mobile so they can reach the most isolated communities.
When Ross visited Riders for Health’s programme in Kenya in 2009, he saw the difficulties that health workers faced delivering health care to remote areas, often by foot. During his visit Ross was able to see how Riders for Health were using motorcycles to help health workers reach five times as many families as they had been able to visit in the past.
Ross has generously supported Riders’ work for many years. In October last year Ross organised and hosted a comedy show entirely in aid of the organisation, featuring Eddie Izzard.
